Chapter 1
Loving God with All Your Heart
When asked by the Pharisees which commandment was the greatest, Jesus said “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.” Matthew 22: 37-38
Have you ever asked yourself what this actually means? How does a person go about loving God with all their heart? What does that feel like? What does it look like? How would a person act who loves God with all their heart?
The best example I have found is in the Old Testament. It is the story of David’s life and his relationship with God. Seems to me that if anybody ever loved God with all their heart, it was David.
Scripture tells us that even as a young shepherd boy David sang songs to God. Clearly God was with him when he felled the giant Goliath and it seems like his love for God continued to grow during his entire life. We know that David loved God so much that he wrote love songs for Him. Psalms 78:70-72
David’s love for God was visceral. He not only wrote love songs to God, but he sang and danced before God. He was so over the top for God as a matter of fact that his wife was embarrassed by his public displays of worship.
David’s relationship with God was not only about worship and praise. He records in his songs feeling scared and lonely and hunted and desperate. He sought God’s direction, God’s protection and even God’s pardon.
The question becomes, if David could love God with all his heart, why can’t we?
What stands in the way? What keeps us from knowing God the same way David did?
